External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed serious concerns over recent attacks on Hindu temples in Canada, highlighting the growing “political space” given to extremist forces in the country. Addressing a joint press conference with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong on Tuesday, Jaishankar stated, “What happened yesterday at the Hindu temple in Canada was deeply concerning,” and urged Canadian authorities to address these troubling incidents.
Jaishankar noted, “Our official spokesperson and the Prime Minister have both expressed deep concern over this issue, emphasizing how strongly we feel about the safety of Indian communities abroad.”
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, responding to questions about similar incidents in Australia, called the attacks “upsetting” for the Indian community. “All Australians, regardless of faith or culture, have the right to feel safe and respected,” Wong stated, underscoring the importance of religious tolerance and safety in Australia. Wong condemned the recent temple vandalism incidents in Australia, which coincided with Diwali, and acknowledged the emotional impact on the Indian community. She stressed that while peaceful protest is a right, “a line must be drawn” against those inciting violence or hatred, with such acts subject to legal action.
The remarks come amid a diplomatic standoff between India and Canada, spurred by Canada’s allegations surrounding the killing of Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Wong noted that Australia respects Canada’s judicial process, affirming Canberra’s commitment to principles like rule of law, judicial independence, and national sovereignty.
Commenting on this diplomatic tension, Jaishankar reiterated that Canada’s allegations against India lack specific evidence and pointed out that “Canada has developed a pattern of making accusations without substantiation.” He added that recent incidents, such as the temple attacks, highlight the increased political leeway granted to extremist groups in Canada, which India finds deeply concerning.
