Bharat Bandh on August 21 in protest against Supreme Court’s Quota ruling

The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has announced a nationwide Bharat Bandh on August 21, protesting the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that permits states to create sub-categories within Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs). The decision, issued on August 1, allows states to prioritize reservation benefits for those who are most in need within these communities. The protestors argue that this “quota within quota” ruling could undermine the broader reservation system, and they are demanding the reversal of the court’s order.

In preparation for the bandh, senior civil and police officials held a meeting to ensure public safety and prevent violence. All divisional commissioners, district magistrates, and senior police officers participated via video conferencing and were instructed to maintain order during the bandh.

While the bandh may disrupt normal activities, essential services will continue to operate. Emergency services, ambulances, hospitals, and pharmacies will remain open. Additionally, police services will be active to ensure public safety. Government offices, banks, schools, and colleges are expected to function normally, according to reports.

The Bharat Bandh reflects widespread discontent with the Supreme Court’s ruling, as various groups express concerns over its potential impact on the reservation system. The call for a shutdown underscores the tension surrounding the issue and the demand for a re-evaluation of the court’s decision.
