70-Year-Old Woman Dead, 13 Injured in tragic building collapse in Mumbai

A devastating incident unfolded in Mumbai’s Grant Road on Saturday, leading to the death of a 70-year-old woman and injuries to 13 others after a portion of a building collapsed.

The collapse occurred around 11 am at the four-storey Rubinissa Manzil on Sleater Road, near the Grant Road railway station. Rescue operations are ongoing, with eight individuals still trapped.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade has successfully rescued 13 people, including six men, six women, and one child. According to the BMC, the collapse involved the partial failure of the balcony and slab on the second and third floors. Efforts are focused on rescuing seven to eight people stranded on the fourth floor, while a portion of the building remains precariously hanging.

The identity of the deceased woman has not yet been determined. She was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. Injured individuals include Atul Shaha (55), Nikesh Shaha (26), and Vijay Aanand (25), who have been admitted to Bhatia Hospital. Sidhhesh Palijia (30) is in the ICU at Breach Candy Hospital.

The building had been declared dangerous a few months ago and received a notice from MHADA. Police personnel and ambulances are currently on-site.

Congress leader and Mumbai North Central MP Varsha Gaikwad praised the efforts of the Mumbai Fire Brigade, especially in rescuing an infant from the partially collapsed structure. She expressed her condolences to the family of the deceased woman and hoped for the safe rescue of those still trapped. This incident comes amidst heavy rains in Mumbai and its adjoining areas since early morning.
