Maharashtra Plans High-Level Panel to Attract Foreign Investment in Housing

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directs faster execution of 3.70 lakh crore housing projects 

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced two major policy initiatives aimed at strengthening the state’s housing sector. He has directed the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) to establish a dedicated public grievance cell to address citizens’ concerns related to housing construction and redevelopment projects. He also granted in-principle approval for the formation of a high-level committee to attract foreign investment into the state’s housing and urban development sector.

The decisions were taken during a high-level review meeting of MHADA’s ongoing projects at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai.

The Chief Minister said MHADA’s large-scale housing initiatives are expected to deliver a significant number of affordable homes over the next few years and stressed that all projects must be completed within the stipulated timelines while maintaining high construction standards.

Fadnavis also instructed officials to expedite the rehabilitation of residents under redevelopment schemes, including the BDD Chawl redevelopment project, to accelerate construction. Reviewing the ambitious Kamathipura redevelopment project, he called for comprehensive planning of supporting infrastructure, including bridges, roads and improved connectivity, to ensure the project’s long-term viability.

According to MHADA Vice-President Sanjeev Jaiswal, the authority is currently implementing 15 major projects worth ₹3.70 lakh crore across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). These redevelopment initiatives are expected to create more than 215,000 residential units, significantly expanding the state’s affordable housing stock.

The Chief Minister also approved the implementation of the Akkalkot Pilgrimage Development Project through MHADA. The first phase will include the development of the Samadhi and temple precincts, while the second phase will focus on the construction of the Palkhi route.

The new measures are expected to enhance transparency and public accountability in MHADA’s redevelopment programmes while strengthening Maharashtra’s efforts to attract global investment into the housing sector and accelerate the delivery of affordable homes.
