A Historic Step by the State Government for the Sustainable Development of Tribal Communities

Mumbai, August 13: The true wealth of nature lies in the hands of the people who inhabit the forests. When human skills are paired with modern science, remarkable transformations become possible and a positive, reassuring picture of this synergy is now unfolding across Maharashtra. To foster comprehensive development in forest and tribal-dominated regions, resolve human-wildlife conflict, and create sustainable livelihoods, the State Government has officially announced the establishment of ‘Vananchal Vigyan Kendra’ (VVK).

This initiative promises a new era of economic and educational empowerment for indigenous forest communities. Beyond administrative regulations, the strategy integrates local tribal traditional knowledge with modern scientific research to tackle challenges like wildlife conservation, forest fires, and land encroachments. Under the guidance of the All India Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram (Jashpur Nagar), the state’s very first Vananchal Vigyan Kendra is being set up as a pilot project in Dhule district. Through this center, local youth and women will receive hands-on training in agro-forestry, bamboo and medicinal plant processing industries, and the value addition of minor forest produce (NTFP), generating thousands of local employment opportunities.

The government has unlocked funding pathways through the State CAMPA fund, international grants, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions. Day-to-day operations will be managed by empanelled non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or educational institutions, while overall legal, strategic, and policy control remains entirely with the State Forest Department.

By prioritizing local tribal youth for employment opportunities, the framework strictly enforces child labor prohibitions and minimum wage compliance. Operating within the boundaries of the Forest Rights Act (FRA) and PESA regulations, this initiative serves as a revolutionary pathway toward self-reliance for forest-dwelling communities.

What is ‘Vananchal Vigyan Kendra’?

A Vananchal Vigyan Kendra (VVK) is a regional institutional hub established in forest and tribal-dominated belts. Its primary objective is to document, validate, and scientifically support the traditional ecological knowledge of local communities. The center acts as a practical learning space, offering practical demonstrations, modern technology transfer, and entrepreneurship training to forest staff, women’s self-help groups, youth, and Joint Forest Management Committees.
