Mumbai, June 15, 2026: Maharashtra has successfully completed the first phase of Census 2027, known as the House Listing and Housing Census, which was conducted across the state from May 16 to June 14, 2026.

During this phase, enumerators visited households in their assigned House Listing Blocks and collected information through a mobile application based on 33 questions notified by the Government of India. The survey covered details related to housing conditions, household amenities, and assets owned by families. Authorities have assured that all personal information collected during the Census is legally protected and will remain strictly confidential.

Apart from generating valuable data on housing and living conditions, the House Listing exercise will serve as the foundation for the Population Enumeration phase scheduled for February 2027, helping ensure complete and accurate coverage.

The exercise was carried out across all 36 districts and 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra. For smooth implementation, 2,20,514 House Listing Blocks were created and assigned to individual enumerators, with one supervisor overseeing every six enumerators.

To complete the massive exercise within the stipulated timeline, the state deployed 63 Principal Census Officers, including 34 District Collectors and 29 Municipal Commissioners, along with 947 Charge Officers, 141 Master Trainers, 3,850 Field Trainers, and nearly 2.45 lakh Enumerators and Supervisors.

The last Census in India was conducted in 2011. Census 2027 will be the 16th Census of India and the 8th Census since Independence.

The Directorate of Census Operations, Maharashtra, expressed gratitude to all Census personnel, the Government of Maharashtra, district administrations, municipal corporations, media organizations, and residents of the state for their cooperation and support in successfully completing the first phase of Census 2027.
