Ashram School in Gadchiroli Loses Recognition After Deaths of Three Students

CM Devendra Fadnavis Orders Action; Recognition of Japali Ashram School Cancelled Following Snakebite Deaths

Mumbai, August 12: The Maharashtra government has cancelled the recognition of the Japali Ashram School in Dhanora taluka of Gadchiroli district following the tragic deaths of three students due to snakebite and serious illness among three other students.

The decision was taken on the directions of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis after the shocking incident came to light. The Chief Minister has also ordered the suspension of the concerned officer in connection with the incident.

The tragedy occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at the residential premises of the school located in Japali village, around 10 kilometres from Dhanora. Six girl students were reportedly bitten by a snake while they were sleeping on the floor. Three of them died, while the remaining three are undergoing treatment.

Following the incident, the government has initiated strict action against the school management. The authorities have been directed to conduct an inquiry and take appropriate action against those found responsible.

Statewide Inspection of Ashram Schools

The government has also decided to conduct inspections of all 511 government-aided ashram schools across Maharashtra. The inspections will examine the safety and living conditions of students and identify shortcomings requiring immediate attention.

Officials have been directed to take action against institutions found violating safety norms. The government has also indicated that recognition of institutions may be cancelled wherever serious deficiencies are found.

A departmental inquiry has reportedly been initiated against the officer responsible for the inspection of the concerned school. The officer had allegedly failed to properly record the poor condition of the school premises during an earlier inspection.

The government has further directed that a comprehensive survey of ashram schools be conducted and that necessary corrective measures be implemented.

Strict Action Promised

Tribal Development Minister Dr. Ashok Uike expressed deep anguish over the incident and said that strict action would be taken against those responsible. He said that the safety of students is of paramount importance and that no negligence on the part of school management or officials would be tolerated.

He also stated that the government would not hesitate to take action against institutions and officials responsible for compromising the safety of tribal students.

The government has emphasised that adequate basic facilities, safe accommodation and proper supervision must be ensured in all ashram schools. The latest decision is being viewed as a strong warning to institutions and officials responsible for the welfare and safety of residential school students.
