Star, owned by American multinational mass media Disney, retains the domestic TV rights while Viacom18, the joint venture between Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance and US’ entertainment conglomerate Paramount Global seals the streaming rights, BCCI said.
These were the packages that were on offer:
A: Domestic TV Rights for India
B: Digital Rights for India
C: 18-match, non-exclusive digital package
D: Overseas TV & Digital Rights
Later, between the day 2 and 3, Viacom grabbed package C for the set of 98 non-exclusive matches on digital across 5 years at Rs. 33.24 crore / match totaled at Rs. 3258.
Disney, along with the Zee group, on day 3, began bidding heavily for Package C taking the price from a base price of Rs 16 crore / game but then, Viacom ‘makes up its mind’ to as much premium it would take and retain the package.
The following is how the total of 98 non-exclusive matches were calculated:
- For seasons 2023 & 2024: 18 matches
- For seasons 2025 & 2026: 20 matches each (for potential 84 matches in all)
- For season 2027: 22 matches (for potential 94 matches in all)
So 18+18+20+20+22 = 98 matches.
