Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (HUL) is streamlining its portfolio, announcing the sale of its Pureit water purification business to AO Smith India for an impressive ₹601 crore ($72 million). This strategic move, detailed in a July 15 exchange filing, allows HUL to concentrate on its core categories.

Pureit will now benefit from A.O. Smith’s extensive expertise and market presence. The transaction, structured on a slump sale basis, is expected to finalize within three months. HUL’s CEO & Managing Director, Rohit Jawa, expressed confidence in the brand’s future, stating, “Pureit has provided essential water purification solutions to millions of loyal consumers. I am confident the brand will thrive further under A.O. Smith’s ownership.” Parag Kulkarni, President of A.O. Smith India, echoed this optimism: “Pureit’s strong brand recognition and the team’s deep understanding of consumer needs and water treatment expertise add tremendous strength to AO Smith in India.”

The Pureit segment recorded a turnover of ₹293 crore in FY24, representing less than one percent of HUL’s annual turnover, highlighting the focused nature of this divestment. This deal marks a significant shift for HUL as it sharpens its focus on its core business areas.
