The grand halls of the Indian Parliament recently echoed with the voice of President Droupadi Murmu, as she delivered her first address to the joint session following the constitution of the 18th Lok Sabha.

One of the standout and more controversial moments in President Murmu’s address was her condemnation of the infamous Emergency imposed in 1975. Describing it as “the biggest and darkest chapter of direct attack on the Constitution,” the President reminded the nation of the outrage that swept across the country during that turbulent period.

Amidst the President’s solemn reflections on the past, she also struck a note of optimism and pride in the resilience of India’s democracy. Highlighting the country’s remarkable achievements over the past decade, she emphasized the “new confidence” that has been infused into the nation, propelling it towards the ambitious goal of becoming a developed economy. She also highlighted the remarkable growth trajectory of the past decade, with India emerging as the world’s fifth-largest economy and contributing 15% to global growth.

One of the key issues that the President addressed was the growing concern over paper leaks and irregularities in various competitive examinations. Acknowledging the distress caused to millions of aspiring youth and their families, she assured the nation of a fair investigation and strict punishment for the culprits.

While the President’s address touched on a wide range of topics, one aspect that drew criticism from certain quarters was the perceived lack of emphasis on the concerns of minorities. Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), lamented the absence of any mention of minorities or unemployment in the speech.

Looking ahead, the President promised that the upcoming budget would be a “document of its futuristic vision,” with major economic and social decisions that would accelerate the pace of reforms and fulfill the aspirations of the people. This forward-looking approach underscores the government’s determination to transform India into a global economic powerhouse and a beacon of prosperity for all its citizens.

Amidst the flurry of economic and social initiatives, President Murmu also drew attention to India’s emerging role as a global leader in the fight against climate change. She proudly proclaimed that the country has already achieved its climate-related targets ahead of schedule and is now spearheading the charge towards a “Harit Yug” or “Green Era.”

From ramping up investments in green industries to promoting sustainable agriculture and the popularization of millets as a superfood, the President’s address highlighted the government’s multifaceted approach to environmental stewardship. This commitment to sustainability and green growth aligns with India’s broader vision of becoming a responsible global citizen and a model for sustainable development.

Recognizing the pivotal role of the youth in shaping India’s future, President Murmu’s address placed a strong emphasis on creating an environment that empowers young dreamers and achievers. She highlighted the government’s efforts to reform the examination and recruitment processes, ensuring transparency and fairness in providing opportunities for the country’s talented youth.

Moreover, the President’s praise for the recent strides made by Indian sportspersons and the government’s initiatives to celebrate the legacies of iconic figures from marginalized communities, such as Bhagwan Birsa Munda and Rani Durgavati, underscored the administration’s commitment to nurturing a culture of innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive representation.

As the world’s attention turns towards India, President Murmu’s address also highlighted the country’s growing stature on the global stage. She proudly recounted India’s recent hosting of the G20 Summit and the country’s active participation in the G7 Summit, underscoring its emergence as a Vishwabandhu or “kin of the world.”

Moreover, the President’s emphasis on India’s role in providing solutions to pressing global challenges, from climate change to food security, underscored the nation’s commitment to being a responsible and influential player on the international stage. This global leadership, combined with the government’s focus on domestic reforms and development, paints a compelling picture of India’s ascent as a formidable economic and geopolitical force.

This vision of a prosperous and empowered India, built on the foundations of democratic values, inclusive growth, and environmental sustainability, resonates with the aspirations of the nation’s 1.4 billion citizens. By charting a bold and transformative course, President Murmu’s address painted a picture of the next chapter of India’s remarkable journey as a global superpower and a beacon of hope for the world.
