India’s premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah received multiple ICC accolades for his stellar performances in 2024, just before the high-voltage India vs Pakistan Champions Trophy 2025 match in Dubai. Despite missing the tournament due to a back injury, Bumrah was present at the Dubai International Stadium to collect his awards and cheer for Team India.
A Year of Dominance
Bumrah was awarded the prestigious ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year (Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy) and the Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for his exceptional performances across formats. The 31-year-old was also named in both the ICC Men’s Test Team of the Year and the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Year, recognizing his dominance in both red-ball and white-ball cricket.
The ICC took to social media to celebrate Bumrah’s achievements, sharing pictures of him holding his four awards and two caps with the caption: “Jasprit Bumrah receives his #ICCAwards and Team Of The Year caps for a stellar 2024.”
Unmatched Test Brilliance
Bumrah had a phenomenal 2024 in Test cricket, picking up 71 wickets in just 13 matches at a staggering average of 14.92. He ended the year with an impressive strike rate of 30.1, making him one of the most lethal bowlers in the longest format. His performances placed him in elite company, as he became only the fourth Indian bowler to claim 70+ wickets in a calendar year, joining legends Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble, and Ravichandran Ashwin.
His standout performances included:
- 19 wickets in the five-Test home series against England.
- 32 wickets in another five-Test series against Australia, where he also crossed the 200-wicket milestone in Tests.
T20 World Cup Heroics
Bumrah’s brilliance wasn’t just limited to red-ball cricket. He played a pivotal role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph in the Americas (USA & West Indies). Leading India’s bowling attack, he took 15 wickets in the tournament, boasting an incredible average of 8.26 and an economy rate of just 4.17. His match-winning spells earned him the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award, helping India secure their second T20 World Cup title.
A Setback but a Strong Presence
Bumrah’s absence from the Champions Trophy 2025 due to a back injury was a major blow for India. He sustained the injury during the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Sydney, which forced him into rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Although initially named in India’s provisional Champions Trophy squad, he was officially ruled out before the tournament.
However, Bumrah made a surprise visit to Dubai, interacting with his teammates and ICC chairman Jay Shah ahead of the marquee clash against Pakistan. He was seen at the stadium, showing his support for the Men in Blue from the stands.
Despite being sidelined, Jasprit Bumrah’s legacy continues to grow, and his recognition by the ICC reaffirms his status as one of the greatest bowlers of this era.
