The Indian Premier League season is here, and so is the spotlight on the IPL stars!
Jasprit Bumrah is one of India’s top IPL stars and has a lot of other players competing against him for this title. There are many great players in the league; however, Bumrah always seems to shine a little brighter. He is a player with amazing talent, who pitches beautifully and handles high-pressure situations with calm. All these qualities have contributed to his status as one of India’s great Cricket players.
But beyond the high-stakes matches and roaring stadiums, there’s a softer, far more personal story that fans can’t get enough of – his relationship with sports presenter Sanjana Ganesan.
When they first met (and misjudged each other)
Like many young people these days, they didn’t have a ‘firework’ moment when they met each other for the first time. In fact, their first meeting was quite awkward. Their initial interaction was back in the 2013-14 Indian Premier League season, when Ganesan was interviewing Bumrah, who was just starting to make a name for himself in the world of Cricket.
After years of not talking to each other, their paths crossed again at the 2019 ICC World Cup in England, but again, it was not a smooth interaction for either of them. She assumed he was already committed to somebody or was not interested. Bumrah, on the other hand, thought she was not interested at all. Funny how all great love stories seem to start off by completely misinterpreting each other.
From colleagues to something more
What changed? A conversation.
Once they actually spoke, the assumptions melted away. The initial casual interaction between the two expanded further into becoming a friendship and even further into something more than just a friendship. Eventually, this growth led to them being quietly in a romantic relationship by 2020 while trying to keep it low-key; there were no grand announcements, no social media posts, no mention of each other during interviews – just two people living their lives together in privacy away from the public and social media noise.
That is possibly what makes the couple’s story altogether unique and special in today’s oversharing society.
Bowling a maiden over (with a proposal)
During the time when both were in the bio-bubble in the UAE (a time where all players were completely cut off from the rest of the world), Bumrah chose to propose (using candles) on a balcony with no paparazzi/videographers present; purely intimate and genuinely personal to both individuals.
The simplicity of the proposal matches the couple’s undeniable connection with each other and reflects perfectly who they are as a couple: private individuals who value personal connections above all else.
In March 2021, the couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in Goa, far from the usual celebrity spectacle. They continue to balance their high-profile careers since then with a low-key personal life. In 2023, the couple welcomed their son, Angad.
Why their love story feels real
Bumrah and Sanjana’s love has no dramatic ‘love at first sight’ story or a ‘larger than life’ proposal tale; they are just two people who met through work and eventually fell for each other and chose to build something meaningful together. And probably, that’s the reason fans are just as invested in Bumrah’s life off the field as they are in his performance on it.
Because sometimes, the quietest love stories leave the strongest impact.
