No ball! Cricket Austalia denies Cameron Green permission to bowl…for now

Controversy is often a feature of the Indian Premier League, but this season saw the Kolkata Knight Riders’ first game through up a bizarre controversy.

The match against the Mumbai Indians was a high-scoring thriller. The Kolkata Knight Riders scored over 220 runs, which the Mumbai Indians chased down with consummate ease. And while one of the major talking points was the fact that the Kolkata Knight Riders lost the game, the major talking point was also about the fact that Cameron Green was not used at all as a bowler during this match.

Cameron Green was bought for ₹25.20 crore in the IPL auction as their premier ‘All-Rounder’ and had been expected to make an impact in both innings of the match. As the Mumbai Indians’ batsmen started demolishing the Kolkata Knight Riders’ bowling attack at the Wankhede Stadium, Cameron Green did not bowl a single over! Therefore, there were a lot of questions to answer.

Finally, there was a now viral response to one of those questions from KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane when he was asked why Cameron Green was not bowling; he simply said, “Ask Cricket Australia”. That statement immediately shifted the focus away from tactics to a much larger discussion regarding how players are managed and who has control over players playing internationally.

Hours after the news broke, Cricket Australia moved quickly to clarify the situation. They revealed that Green is currently dealing with an ongoing issue in his lower back and is under strict monitoring of his workload. He has been advised to take a brief period of time off from bowling, and he will gradually increase his workload back to being able to bowl. He is expected to be bowling again in approximately 10-12 days.

Cricket Australia also made it clear to KKR that they had already informed them of these limitations well ahead of the tournament and that KKR should not be surprised by the news.

The clarification offers answers to many of the questions surrounding “why,” but offers an additional discussion based on the initial statement.

In an environment such as the Indian Premier League, where the franchises are investing significant amounts of money for the full benefit of the players, how much control should a national governing body have? KKR did not just sign a batter; they signed a player who was going to be a key contributor to the balance of their team. With KKR giving up more than 220 runs, the absence of that particular bowler will severely affect their chances of winning a championship.

This is not the first time these tensions have arisen, nor will it be the last; as long as there are franchise competitions in addition to international commitments, teams will need to adapt quickly to changes.

However, KKR’s concerns are very pressing right now; having lost their first game of the season, there are also questions about the balance of the team and the fact that their largest investment so far has not yet been available in its full capacity. This is greatly compounded by bowling absences, with Mustafizur withdrawn, and Harshit Rana and Akash Deep injured.

For now, Cameron Green remains a batter in an all-rounder’s role. And until he picks up the ball again, the debate isn’t going anywhere.
