MUMBAI, AUGUST 20: The BMC Standing Committee has approved a proposal to construct an underground pedestrian passage connecting the Nehru Science Centre Metro Station on Metro Line 3 with the Worli Promenade and the proposed Landscape Garden along the Coastal Road.

The approximately 1-km-long and 7.5-metre-wide passage will be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹702.44 crore, with the work to be undertaken by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), Standing Committee Chairman Prabhakar Shinde said.

The passage is intended to provide pedestrians with a safe and convenient connection from the metro station, through the Mahalaxmi Racecourse area and beneath Lala Lajpatrai Road, to the promenade and Landscape Garden.

The proposed 300-acre Landscape Garden is expected to become a major public and tourism attraction. Shinde said the new pedestrian link will strengthen connectivity between Metro 3, the Coastal Road, the promenade and the garden, while reducing dependence on private vehicles.

He said the project will also promote public transport and pedestrian infrastructure and make the area more accessible to Mumbai residents and domestic and international tourists.

According to Shinde, MMRC had expressed readiness to undertake the underground tunnel work in June 2025. Following a joint meeting in December 2025, the Municipal Commissioner approved execution of the work through MMRC, with the BMC agreeing to bear the financial cost.

Shinde defended the decision to entrust the work to MMRC, saying both BMC and MMRC are public-sector institutions and that MMRC’s technical expertise would help execute the project effectively.

He added that the pedestrian passage is expected to become an important, safe and affordable public transport link for Mumbai in the future.
