Major decision by State Government to change the name of the Scheduled Castes Commission

Mumbai, April 15: The Maharashtra government has taken an important decision to change the name of the Maharashtra State Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission. The commission will now be known as the “Maharashtra State Scheduled Castes Commission.”The commission was originally established through a government resolution dated March 1, 2005, to study the social, educational, and economic conditions of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and to recommend necessary measures to the government.

Subsequently, in line with the policy of the Central Government, the proposal to grant independent status and statutory recognition to the Maharashtra State Scheduled Castes Commission was approved in the State Cabinet meeting held on June 10, 2025. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra State Scheduled Castes Commission Act, 2025, was enacted in 2025. Under this law, approval was given to establish a separate Scheduled Castes Commission, and its implementation came into effect from September 12, 2025.

The government had also earlier decided to dissolve the existing Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission. Following a request from the commission regarding the name change, the matter was under consideration, after which the final decision was taken.
