Ravindra Waikar Raises Illegal Constructions Near Powai, Pasapoli and Vihar Lakes in Lok Sabha

Mumbai: Mumbai North West MP Ravindra Waikar has raised concerns in the Lok Sabha over alleged unauthorised construction and increasing noise pollution around Powai Lake, Pasapoli and Vihar Lake, warning that the activities are causing serious and irreversible damage to urban wildlife habitats.

Speaking under Lok Sabha Rule 377, Waikar urged the Central Government and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to intervene immediately and issue stop-work notices against construction activities in the sensitive areas.

Waikar highlighted that the region serves as an important habitat and breeding ground for the mugger crocodile, a species protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. He also pointed to threats faced by rare bird species whose habitats are reportedly being disturbed.

He further stated that Vihar Lake forms an important part of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park Eco-Sensitive Zone, where construction without the required statutory permissions can attract legal action.

Waikar demanded a Central fact-finding committee to assess the environmental damage and called for strict action against responsible officials and developers under Section 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act. He also urged authorities to protect Powai Lake as efforts are underway to secure Ramsar Site status for the lake.
