Adopting an aggressive stance against the state government over agrarian distress, hundreds of farmers led by Krantikari Shetkari Sanghatana chief Ravikant Tupkar staged an unprecedented protest outside the Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai today. Demanding an unconditional and complete farm loan waiver, prompt crop insurance clearances, and guaranteed fair prices for agricultural produce, the agitators marched toward the legislature, attempting to breach the heavy security cordon to storm the complex. In a symbolic act of defiance, the angry protestors flung copies of land revenue records (7/12 extracts) and threw raw cotton and soybeans in the air to condemn the administration’s policies.
The high-octane drama unfolded around 10:30 AM on Thursday, catching the security apparatus off guard. As chaotic scenes erupted outside the legislative complex, the police intervened swiftly, detaining Tupkar alongside more than a hundred office-bearers and activists of the organization.
High-Stakes Escalation and Suicide Threat
The agitation intensified dramatically following Tupkar’s detention. In a coordinated move, four activists from the organization climbed two massive trees directly facing the Mantralaya (State Secretariat), tying makeshift nooses around their necks. Concurrently, another faction of protesting farmers marched into the Arabian Sea at Marine Drive, threatening to drown themselves. The activists on the trees refused to climb down, demanding an immediate high-level meeting with the government and a definitive written assurance regarding a comprehensive debt relief package. The twin crises triggered widespread panic within the city administration and the police force.
Government Bows to Pressure
Following a tense four-hour standoff that paralyzed the VIP administrative zone, the state government eventually capitulated to the protestors’ demands. Minister Girish Mahajan personally telephoned the detained leader, Ravikant Tupkar, at the police station, conveying an official invitation for an emergency high-level meeting with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today.
Following this breakthrough, Tupkar made an emotional appeal via telephone to the activists perched on the trees, emphasizing that their lives were invaluable to the agrarian struggle and that they needed to survive to fight future battles. Acting on his directives, the activists called off their protest and were safely brought down by emergency services. The dramatic agitation has effectively pushed the state’s unresolved agrarian crisis back to the absolute center of Maharashtra’s political discourse, with the farming community now anxiously awaiting the outcome of the evening’s high-level ministerial talks.
