In a major initiative aimed at enhancing passenger safety and safeguarding railway infrastructure, Indian Railways has announced a nationwide fire safety audit of railway stations across the country.
The comprehensive audit will evaluate existing fire prevention and emergency response systems at stations and identify areas that require improvement. The exercise is intended to ensure that railway premises are fully prepared to handle fire-related emergencies and other safety incidents effectively.
The audits will examine key safety infrastructure, including station buildings, electrical installations, air-conditioning and ventilation systems, emergency exits, firefighting equipment, water storage and supply arrangements, pumping systems, and sprinkler networks. Officials will also assess compliance with prescribed fire safety and security standards.
Any shortcomings identified during the inspections will be addressed through immediate corrective measures. Joint inspection teams comprising officials from multiple railway departments will conduct the audits, with support from specialized agencies and State Fire Departments wherever necessary.
Indian Railways stated that all recommended improvements will be implemented on a priority basis to further strengthen emergency preparedness and safety standards across the network.
