Mumbai, June 23: The Maharashtra Government will ensure strict implementation of the law prohibiting Triple Talaq and will not allow injustice against any woman, Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam informed the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

Responding to a discussion on a calling attention motion moved by MLA Devyani Pharande, Kadam said the government is highly sensitive to issues affecting Muslim women and remains committed to providing justice and protection to victims.

He cited a case from Nashik, where a woman filed a complaint on May 8, 2026, alleging that her husband had divorced her over the phone. A case was registered against the accused under the Triple Talaq law. Within eight days of the complaint, an attempt was allegedly made on the woman’s life, leading to another criminal case. The accused has since been arrested.

Presenting official data, Kadam said 42 Triple Talaq cases were registered across Maharashtra in 2024, all of which were found to be genuine. Action was taken against 152 accused persons. In 2025, 39 such cases were registered, resulting in action against 137 accused and the arrest of 95 individuals.

The minister stressed that the issue should be viewed from the perspective of women’s rights and justice rather than through a political or religious lens. He noted that the central law banning Triple Talaq prohibits divorce through phone calls, text messages, or emails, and the state government is committed to its effective enforcement.

On the issue of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Kadam said the state government has adopted a positive approach and has decided to set up a committee headed by a retired High Court judge to study the matter and gather public feedback. A decision on implementing the UCC in Maharashtra will be taken after the committee submits its report.

He further stated that issues related to polygamy would also be addressed under a common legal framework if the UCC is implemented. The government, he added, remains fully committed to safeguarding the rights and dignity of Muslim women.
