Mumbai | May 14, 2026:  In a significant move to safeguard the regional economy against global volatility the Government of Maharashtra has introduced a comprehensive “Austerity Master Plan.”

This strategic initiative follows a formal advisory from the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister aimed at mitigating the potential impacts of rising energy costs and supply chain disruptions triggered by the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

Chief Secretary Rajesh Agarwal has issued an official circular to all state departments, mandating a period of strict fiscal discipline and resource conservation.

To achieve immediate reductions in administrative spending the state has suspended all international travel for government officials and prohibited the authorization of new foreign tours for the foreseeable future.

Furthermore a six-month freeze has been placed on the appointment of new external consultants across all administrative divisions.

The government is also transitioning toward a digital-first governance model requiring that ministerial departmental and district level meetings, as well as training sessions and seminars be conducted exclusively via video conferencing to eliminate logistical and travel expenses.

Energy and fuel conservation form the cornerstone of the new policy which introduces a fundamental shift in the operational lifestyle of the bureaucracy.

Senior officials are now required to utilize public transportation such as the Metro local trains or buses at least once a week in lieu of official vehicles.

The state is also prioritizing carpooling initiatives and accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles within its fleet.

In government buildings air conditioning systems must be maintained at a standard temperature of 24°C to 26°C, and offices have been directed to maximize the use of natural light.

Additionally the government is fast-tracking approvals for Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections encouraging the hospitality sector in major urban hubs like Mumbai to move away from traditional fuels.

The austerity measures also extend to public health and sustainable agriculture. Government run canteens hospitals and childcare centers will shift their procurement patterns replacing imported oils with indigenous groundnut and mustard oils to support local production and improve nutritional standards.

Simultaneously the state is launching a large scale campaign to promote natural and organic farming aiming to reduce the financial and environmental burden of chemical fertilizers through precision soil testing and targeted crop guidance.

In an effort to further conserve fuel and maintain public order the Police Department has been instructed to withhold permissions for vehicle processions and bike rallies.

The state has also signaled a substantial reduction in expenditure on high-cost advertisements and ceremonial activities.

These multifaceted measures represent a proactive approach to building administrative resilience and self-reliance during a period of heightened global uncertainty.
