Mumbai: In a major welfare measure aimed at improving the living standards of police personnel, the Maharashtra government has approved housing advance assistance worth ₹1,768.08 crore for 5,459 police officers and employees across the state.
The assistance will be provided through the Maharashtra State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation following proposals submitted under various police welfare schemes.
Sharing the announcement through his official social media account, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state government remains committed to supporting police personnel who dedicate themselves to maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety.
The Chief Minister stated that housing for police personnel has remained a priority for the government, considering the crucial role played by the police force in safeguarding citizens and maintaining security across the state.
Fadnavis recalled that during the 2014–2019 period, the government had implemented a large-scale interest subsidy scheme to help police personnel purchase homes. He noted that the scheme was discontinued during the tenure of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government but was later revived after the current administration returned to power.
According to the Chief Minister the newly approved financial package will provide substantial support to thousands of police personnel aspiring to own homes, there by strengthening their social security and improving their quality of life.
Officials said the sanctioned amount will be disbursed as housing construction advance, enabling beneficiaries to either purchase or build residential properties. The initiative is expected to particularly benefit middle- and lower-ranking police personnel who often face financial challenges in securing housing in urban centres such as Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur.
In recent years, the Maharashtra government has increasingly focused on police welfare initiatives, including housing support, healthcare assistance, insurance coverage, and infrastructure development for police establishments. Senior officials believe that improved living conditions and financial stability can significantly boost morale and operational efficiency within the police force.
The latest allocation is being viewed as one of the largest housing related approvals for Maharashtra Police personnel in recent years, reflecting the state government’s continued emphasis on strengthening welfare support for frontline law enforcement staff.
