India and Norway have strengthened their partnership in science, technology and sustainable development with the signing of five major agreements in Oslo during Prime Minister Narendra modi’s visit to Norway. The agreements were signed by the counsil of scientific and industrial research (CSIR) and the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) with leading Norwegian research and academic institutions on May 18, 2026.

Led by CSIR Director General and DSIR Secretary Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, the partnerships aim to enhance collaboration in clean energy, offshore wind, sustainability, geosciences, research and academic exchange. One of the key agreements was signed between CSIR/DSIR and the research council of Norway to promote joint research, innovation, technology development and capacity building. The partnership will support collaborative projects, exchange programmes for scientists and researchers, workshops and initiatives focused on climate, clean energy, oceans and healthcare.

CSIR also signed a collaboration agreement with sintef, Norway’s leading independent research organization, for joint work on circular economy and sustainability. The cooperation will focus on bio-based materials, offshore wind and ocean energy, carbon capture and waste management technologies.

Another project-specific agreement involving several CSIR institutes and SINTEF organizations will strengthen India’s offshore renewable energy sector. The collaboration will focus on floating offshore wind technologies, reducing energy costs, sustainability standards, pilot projects, skill development and industrial growth. CSIR has allocated around ₹341 lakh for the project.

In addition, CSIR, the academy of scientific and the innovative research (AcSIR) and the Norwegian university of science and technology (NTNU) signed a Joint Declaration of Intent on “Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation for the Green Shift.” The agreement will encourage joint research, student and faculty exchanges and academic cooperation in sustainability, healthcare, ocean science and engineering technologies.

Meanwhile csir national geophysical research institute signed a five-year agreement with emerald geomodelling for geoscience-based solutions for infrastructure projects in India. The partnership will include research collaborations, geophysical surveys, data analysis and training programmes.

The agreements are expected to strengthen long-term India–Norway cooperation in science, innovation and sustainable development while boosting clean energy and research partnerships between the two countries.
