India and New Zealand have taken a significant step toward enhancing their bilateral relationship by signing a new defence cooperation agreement. This milestone follows a series of high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon in New Delhi on Monday.

During the discussions, the two leaders also held a delegation-level meeting and issued a joint statement. Prime Minister Modi welcomed PM Luxon and his cabinet, noting the deep connection between the two nations, highlighting Luxon’s recent celebration of Holi, and expressing enthusiasm for his participation as the chief guest at the upcoming Raisina Dialogue 2025.

Addressing the media, Modi also emphasized the shared commitment to tackling the issue of illegal migration through collaborative efforts between the two governments.

PM Luxon, who arrived in India on Sunday for a five-day visit, expressed New Zealand’s strong interest in bolstering trade and economic ties with India. In his remarks, Luxon emphasized that India’s economic opportunities are crucial for New Zealand’s prosperity, security, and society. He also announced the launch of negotiations for a comprehensive India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement, reflecting both countries’ ambitions for deeper economic engagement.

Luxon’s visit, accompanied by a senior delegation of business and community leaders, marks a significant milestone in the growing strategic and economic partnership between the two nations.
