Mumbai, April 29: In a landmark decision aimed at making Maharashtra greener and maintaining ecological balance, the state government has approved the establishment of the “Green Maharashtra Commission.” The decision was taken in a Cabinet meeting with the ambitious goal of planting 3 billion (300 crore) trees by 2047, marking India’s Amrit Kaal. The state has also finalized a master plan to increase forest cover from the current 21% to 33%.

* A ‘Command’ Mechanism for Environmental Conservation

The Commission is expected to play a crucial role in achieving the 33% green cover target as envisioned under the National Forest Policy. The Chief Minister will chair the governing council of the Commission, while the Deputy Chief Minister and concerned ministers will oversee its functioning. Beyond just planting trees, the Commission will focus on their survival, strengthening climate resilience, and improving soil quality.

* 27 Lakh Hectares to Form a ‘Land Bank’

To achieve the target of planting 3 billion trees, approximately 2.7 million hectares of land will be required. To address this challenge, the government plans to develop a district-wise land bank by consolidating land available with the Forest Department, MGNREGA, and other government bodies. In addition to the existing 29,000 sq km of land, new areas will be identified for region-specific and eco-friendly plantations.

* Integrated Implementation and Job Creation

So far, plantation drives were carried out independently by different departments. With the formation of this Commission, funds, resources, and land use will now be integrated for more effective implementation. The initiative is expected not only to improve the environment but also to generate large-scale employment at the local level, while supporting water conservation and biodiversity protection.

* ‘A Green Mission for Future Generations’ — Chief Minister

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that the goal of planting 3 billion trees by 2047 is not merely a government programme but a “green mission” for future generations. Through the Green Maharashtra Commission, the state aims to systematically increase forest cover to 33% by ensuring land availability, adequate funding, and the use of modern technology, he said.
