Financial Relief for Pensioners Ahead of Festive Season: Mahayuti Government Announces Major DA Hike and Cash Arrears

Mumbai: Ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, the Mahayuti government has once again opened the state treasury to benefit government employees and, in particular, pensioners across Maharashtra. The state government has announced a significant hike in the Dearness Allowance (DA) for thousands of retired personnel. Effective retrospectively from January 1, 2026, this increase along with seven months of accumulated arrears will be disbursed in cash alongside the August salary and pension payments, providing timely financial relief right before the festive season.

5% DA Hike for 6th Pay Commission Pensioners

Pensioners receiving payments under the 6th Pay Commission have received a major boost, with their DA rate being increased by 5 percentage points from 257% to 262%. By prioritizing the welfare of senior citizens, the government has taken a substantial financial step.

2% Relief for 7th Pay Commission Pensioners

The relief extends beyond the 6th Pay Commission as well. For regular state government pensioners and family pensioners under the 7th Pay Commission, the DA rate on basic pension has been increased from 58% to 60%. Although a 2% rise might appear modest, receiving the lump-sum cash arrears for the seven-month period from January to July 2026 along with the August pension has brought widespread satisfaction among beneficiaries.

Broad Coverage Across Zilla Parishads and Universities

The scope of this decision is extensive, covering not only core government staff but also pensioners from recognized and aided educational institutions, agricultural and non-agricultural universities, affiliated private colleges, and Zilla Parishads. While political observers view this step through the lens of upcoming elections, the direct credit of arrears into bank accounts offers substantial financial relief to pensioners statewide.
