FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe Says No Compromise on Public Health; Packaged Edible Oil Rule Has Been in Force Since 2011

Mumbai: Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has warned that food safety regulations will be enforced strictly across all establishments, from roadside food stalls to five-star hotels.

Speaking at a press conference, Mundhe said loose edible oil poses serious health risks and that earlier tests had detected toxic and carcinogenic substances, including arsenic, in loose oil. He clarified that the requirement to sell edible oil only in packaged form is not a new decision, but a regulation in force since 2011.

Mundhe said adulteration would not be tolerated and added that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had also made his stand clear on the issue.

He stressed that the same food safety standards apply to street vendors, restaurants and five-star hotels. The FDA will issue detailed food safety guidelines ahead of the upcoming festive season.

Mundhe also said special inspections are being conducted in schools and Anganwadis to ensure safe food for children.

On reports of his possible transfer, Mundhe said transfers were an administrative matter and that he would continue to perform his duties with dedication.
