Maharashtra Chief Minister defends Prime Minister Modi’s austerity appeal amid the global energy crisis while slamming the Opposition Leader for a perceived lack of strategic understanding.

NEW DELHI / MUMBAI, May 11, 2026: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched a scathing counter-attack on the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, labeling him a “rejected leader” and “rejected product.” These remarks followed Gandhi’s criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent public appeal for resource conservation, in which Gandhi referred to the Prime Minister as a “Compromised PM.”

Speaking to the media during the CII Annual Business Summit 2026 held in New Delhi, he launched a sharp attack on Rahul Gandhi.

The political friction began after Prime Minister Modi addressed the nation on Sunday against the backdrop of escalating tensions in West Asia and a deepening global energy crisis. The Prime Minister urged citizens to adopt a nationally responsible lifestyle to safeguard the economy and foreign exchange reserves. His appeals included limiting the use of petrol and diesel, prioritizing work-from-home options to reduce travel, avoiding gold purchases for at least a year, and reducing the consumption of imported oils and subsidized fertilizers in favor of indigenous products.

Responding to these directives, Rahul Gandhi used social media and public platforms to characterize the appeals as evidence of policy failure after twelve years of governance. He alleged that the administration was shifting the burden of economic mismanagement onto ordinary citizens by attempting to dictate their personal purchasing and lifestyle choices.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, currently in New Delhi for the CII Annual Business Summit 2026, responded to these allegations while speaking to the media at the Mantosh Sondhi Centre. Defending the Prime Minister’s stance, Fadnavis highlighted the dire global situation, noting that the world is facing a massive energy crunch. He pointed out that while neighboring nations are struggling with fuel supplies and skyrocketing prices, India maintains a steady supply due to strategic leadership. He emphasized that the call for conservation is a vital move to protect the country’s foreign exchange and strengthen the economy against global volatility.

Directly addressing the criticism from the Opposition, the Chief Minister stated that if Rahul Gandhi cannot comprehend the strategic necessity of this appeal, it is a reflection of his limited understanding. He asserted that the public understands the situation well and will respond positively to the Prime Minister’s call. Fadnavis further remarked that Rahul Gandhi remains the most rejected leader in the country and described him as a rejected product whose comments stem from a lack of vision for the nation’s welfare.

The escalating war of words underscores the intensifying political friction between the ruling party and the Opposition bloc as the country navigates complex geopolitical challenges. While the government frames the austerity measures as a necessary national duty to ensure stability, the Opposition continues to project them as a sign of economic distress. Fadnavis concluded by urging the people of Maharashtra and India to support the Prime Minister’s vision, asserting that collective discipline is essential to ensure India remains a stable destination for global investment during these uncertain times.
