Mumbai, April 30: For the first time, Census 2027 will be conducted using digital technology, with an optional self-enumeration facility introduced for citizens across the country.
In Maharashtra, the self-enumeration process will be available from May 1 to May 15, 2026, ahead of the official house-listing phase. Citizens can submit their household details online through the official portal developed by the Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India.
Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, Chief Principal Census Officer Dr. Nirupama J. Dange clarified that the self-enumeration process is optional, and those who do not participate will still be covered during the regular enumeration.
Officials stated that the process can be completed by any household member in 15–20 minutes, and a Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) will be generated after submission. No documents are required for this step.
Enumerators will visit households across the state from May 16 to June 14, 2026, as part of the first phase known as the Houselisting and Housing Census. Even households that complete self-enumeration must provide their SE ID to enumerators for verification and final validation.
Authorities assured that all data submitted online will be securely encrypted. Citizens have been advised to use only the official portal and verify communications carrying the identifier “RGICEN” to avoid fraudulent activities.
The initiative is part of the government’s broader push under Digital India, aimed at enhancing the efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness of census data collection.
