A Union Minister has launched two new reports by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), shedding light on the rapid growth potential of rooftop solar energy in India and the opportunities it presents for employment and sustainable development.

The first report, titled “What Drives Indian Households to Adopt Rooftop Solar?”, explores the factors influencing household decisions to install rooftop solar systems. Based on a nationwide survey, the study provides valuable insights into consumer awareness, financial considerations, and the decision-making processes of Indian families.

The second report, “Maximising Rooftop Solar Value Through a Strong Operations and Maintenance Ecosystem”, emphasizes the importance of efficient operations and maintenance (O&M) services in the residential rooftop solar sector. The report estimates that the expanding O&M ecosystem could create more than 330,000 jobs annually while unlocking a multi-billion-dollar market opportunity across the country.

The event also featured two high-level plenary sessions focused on accelerating rooftop solar adoption in India.

The first session, titled “From 4 Million to 10 Million: The PM Surya Ghar Journey,” brought together senior officials from the Ministries of New and Renewable Energy, Power, and Finance, along with representatives from leading financial institutions. Discussions centered on the policy framework, financing mechanisms, and implementation strategies required to expand rooftop solar installations to one crore households under the PM Surya Ghar initiative.

The second session, “Subnational Frontiers: Powering the State-Led Solar Surge,” featured state energy leaders who discussed best practices, innovative incentive models, and ways to balance rooftop solar expansion with the financial sustainability of power distribution companies (DISCOMs). The session also highlighted the importance of inter-state collaboration in driving India’s clean energy transition.

The discussions underscored the growing role of rooftop solar energy in achieving India’s renewable energy goals and emphasized the need for coordinated action among governments, utilities, financial institutions, and industry stakeholders.
