Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar Orders Strict Monitoring and Quality Repairs
Mumbai: Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar has directed officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to ensure that every pothole-related complaint received during the monsoon is resolved within 24 hours. He also instructed engineers to ensure that potholes are repaired according to prescribed technical standards, scientific methods, and quality benchmarks.
Bangar said that nearly 1,700 kilometres of roads in Mumbai have already been concretised, while work on the remaining roads is underway. As a result, the number of potholes and related complaints has significantly reduced this monsoon, leading to substantial savings in road maintenance expenditure.
During a review meeting of assistant engineers from the Roads and Traffic Department, Bangar emphasized proactive road inspections and immediate repairs of damaged road patches. He directed beat-level subordinate engineers to conduct regular field inspections on two-wheelers, identify potholes before complaints are received, and ensure prompt repairs using the mastic method, which offers greater durability.
He stressed that contractors appointed zone-wise must maintain adequate manpower, machinery, and material stocks, including mastic cookers, to ensure timely repairs. Engineers have been instructed to closely monitor contractors and verify that all pothole-filling work adheres to technical specifications.
Bangar also highlighted that potholes appearing on roads under the Defect Liability Period (DLP) must be repaired by the respective contractors free of cost, with no additional payment from the BMC. Contractors failing to maintain such roads may face penal action.
The BMC has also operationalised the “MyBMC MARG” Complaint Management and Redressal System, enabling citizens to register pothole complaints by uploading photographs, location details, and other relevant information for faster action. Officials have been directed to respond promptly to all complaints received through the platform.
