Focus on Garbage Vulnerable Points, Strengthen Waste Collection System: BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide 

Mumbai, July 29, 2026: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Mrs. Ashwini Bhide has directed officials to give priority attention to Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) and ensure effective measures to maintain cleanliness across the city. She instructed that waste collection should be carried out in two shifts daily, with an increase in the number of garbage transport vehicles and their trips.

During her inspection visit to Mankhurd, Govandi and Parel areas, Commissioner Bhide reviewed the functioning of solid waste management systems, sanitation facilities, manpower availability and garbage collection processes. She emphasized strengthening waste collection in slum and densely populated areas to prevent garbage accumulation.

She also directed officials to complete road sweeping on busy routes before the start of traffic movement and maintain cleanliness on major roads and footpaths. Footpaths should remain clean, pedestrian-friendly and free from encroachments, she said.

During the visit, the Commissioner inspected sanitation chowkies, maintenance facilities and road repair centres. She also conducted a surprise inspection of a garbage compactor vehicle (MH 01 CV 2303) to verify its route, collection efficiency, waste transportation and post-collection sanitation practices.

Mrs. Bhide instructed officials to install CCTV cameras at sensitive locations and take strict action, including penalties and criminal cases wherever required, against citizens dumping waste in public places, roads and drains.

She further stressed the importance of preparing area-specific cleanliness plans considering population, geography and local waste generation patterns. The Commissioner appreciated the efforts of ward-level teams and said that improving cleanliness management is a continuous process requiring consistent monitoring and coordinated efforts.

Senior BMC officials, including Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners, were present during the inspection.
