AI and Geo-Tagging to Monitor Development Works in Urban Local Bodies Across Maharashtra
Urban Development Department Takes Major Step Towards Transparency and Quality Improvement
Mumbai, July 29: In a significant move to bring greater transparency, accountability and quality control in development projects carried out by urban local bodies in Maharashtra, the state government has decided to introduce advanced technology-based auditing using Artificial Intelligence (AI), Geo-Tagging and GIS Mapping.
The decision follows the announcement made by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during the 2026 Monsoon Legislative Assembly session, where he had assured that modern technology-based audits would be gradually implemented to improve the quality and monitoring of civic development works.
Accordingly, the Urban Development Department has constituted a special study group under the chairmanship of the Commissioner and Director of the Directorate of Municipal Administration. A government resolution regarding the formation of the committee was issued on July 29, 2026.
The new system aims to monitor development projects funded by the government in municipal corporations, municipalities and municipal councils. Complaints regarding poor quality work, delays and misuse of funds in projects such as roads, water supply and infrastructure have often been reported. With AI and geo-tagging technology, authorities will now be able to track projects at every stage.
Under the high-tech audit system, AI and GIS mapping will help assess the quality and accuracy of works, while geo-tagging will enable real-time online monitoring of project progress and completion timelines.
The audit process will also involve citizens, resident associations, NGOs, technical experts, educational institutions and elected representatives along with government officials.
The newly formed committee will submit its recommendations to the government within one month. The report will focus on improving technical and financial audits, effective use of AI, strengthening social audits, ensuring timely completion and maintaining quality standards in ongoing and upcoming development projects.
