State Government Approves 14.91 Crore for Fire Safety Upgrade

MUMBAI, AUGUST 20: The Maharashtra Government’s Transport Department has taken a major step to strengthen fire safety at Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across the state. Advanced, wireless fire alarm systems based on Internet of Things (IoT) technology will be installed at 24 Regional and Sub-Regional Transport Offices.

The state government has granted administrative and financial approval to an estimated project cost of 14.91 crore (14,91,09,510). An official Government Resolution approving the project has recently been issued.

The new fire safety system will operate on wireless mesh topology and will be connected to a cloud-based monitoring portal. In the event of smoke or a fire outbreak, sensors installed across the premises will immediately detect the threat and activate alarms. An automated dialer will also send phone alerts and SMS notifications to designated officials and emergency response agencies, enabling swift action.

The system will remain operational for up to 12 hours during a power outage, supported by a dedicated battery backup facility.

Under the project, the fire safety infrastructure will be installed at RTO offices in Mumbai Central, Andheri, Borivali, Thane, Panvel, Pen, Vasai, Pune (Alandi Road and Sangam Bridge), Pimpri-Chinchwad, Baramati, Kolhapur, Sangli, Ichalkaranji, Satara, Karad, Phaltan, Solapur, Akluj, Nashik, Malegaon, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri and Wardha.

More than 4,300 smoke detectors, manual call points and control-room facilities will be installed as part of the project.

RTO offices witness a heavy daily footfall of citizens seeking driving licences, vehicle registration and tax-related services. These offices also house extensive records of vehicles and several important government documents. The installation of a modern fire detection and alert system is therefore expected to significantly improve the safety of citizens, employees and critical government records.

The initiative is aimed at ensuring early detection of fire emergencies, faster response and prevention of loss of life and vital government records, marking a major upgrade in the fire safety infrastructure of Maharashtra’s transport administration.
