The First Assignment
Ratan Tata’s first major role within the Tata Group was with NELCO, an electronics company. During a trip from Mumbai to Nashik, the team had to stop due to a flat tire. While the driver worked on fixing it, Ratan Tata was seen assisting him, showcasing his humility and hands-on leadership, even in the smallest of tasks.
Revenge on Ford
In 1999, during acquisition talks between Tata Motors and Ford, Ratan Tata endured a demeaning remark from Ford’s chairman, Bill Ford. As Tata Motors’ Indica struggled in the market, Bill Ford said, “You don’t know anything, so why did you start a passenger car division? We’re doing you a favour by buying it.” Deeply hurt, Ratan Tata decided to keep Tata Motors’ car division. Nine years later, in 2008, when Ford was on the verge of bankruptcy, Ratan Tata turned the tables by acquiring Jaguar and Land Rover, making history with one of the most successful turnarounds in the automobile industry.
Standing Tall Against Terrorism
Ratan Tata’s leadership was tested during the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, when Tata’s Taj Mahal Palace Hotel was one of the primary targets. Of the 166 people killed, 33 were from the hotel, including 11 employees. Standing at the Colaba end of the hotel, Ratan Tata pledged lifelong support to the victims’ families, including lifetime salaries for the families of the employees who lost their lives.
A Love for Dogs
Ratan Tata’s deep love for animals, particularly dogs, was well-known. He established India’s first state-of-the-art pet hospital in Mumbai and ensured free entry for stray animals at the Taj Mahal Hotel and Tata Group’s headquarters. In 2018, he even canceled a trip to London, where he was to receive a lifetime achievement award from Prince Charles, to care for his ailing dog, reflecting his enduring compassion for animals.
