Can Red Light Therapy support hair growth? Understanding the science Behind Photobiomodulation

Photobiomodulation, also known as low-level light therapy or red light treatment, is a non-surgical therapeutic technique involving low-power red or near-infra-red light. When applied to the scalp, the light penetrates into the scalp without causing any heat or injury to the tissue. The science behind it is very fascinating. The red and near-infrared light can work with mitochondria, which are part of the cells that produce energy. The current data shows that research that includes over 1,383 patients using an FDA-cleared low-level laser helmet reported overall clinical effectiveness of close to 80%, with median use running to roughly 38–40 weeks -a figure worth noting, because it reflects how long consistent use typically continued before outcomes were assessed . However, it should be remembered that the results of the treatment differ among individuals and depend on their loss cause and the kind of devices and treatment schedules implemented. This is why it is inappropriate to consider red light therapy a general solution for any hair loss case. People facing the issue due to insufficient nutrition, hormonal changes, stress or scalp problems should look for a different solution. Identification of the underlying cause should always be the first step in the process.
