Residents of Delhi-NCR woke up to strong tremors early Monday morning as an earthquake of magnitude 4.0 struck the national capital. The quake occurred at 5:36 AM IST, with its epicenter in Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi, at a depth of 5 km, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

Details of the Earthquake
  • Date & Time: February 17, 2025, 05:36:55 IST
  • Location: New Delhi, Delhi
  • Coordinates: Latitude 28.59° N, Longitude 77.16° E
  • Depth: 5 km
Impact and Response

The tremors lasted for a few seconds, prompting panic among residents in Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad. Many rushed out of their homes as a precaution, though no damage or casualties have been reported.

Delhi Police has urged citizens to remain calm and contact the emergency helpline 112 for any assistance. “We hope you all are safe, Delhi! For any emergency help, dial 112,” read a post on X (formerly Twitter). The Delhi Fire Service also confirmed that they received no emergency calls related to the quake.

Reactions from Political Leaders

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the situation, advising people to stay calm and alert for aftershocks. “Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation,” he posted on X.

Political leaders across parties reacted to the earthquake. BJP leader Tajinder Bagga simply tweeted, “Earthquake?” while Congress leader Alka Lamba posted a similar message. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal also expressed concern, praying for the safety of residents.

Why Were the Tremors So Strong?

Despite its relatively low magnitude, the earthquake was strongly felt due to its shallow depth and epicenter in a densely populated area. Some residents also reported hearing a loud rumbling noise, which experts say could be due to tectonic movement and bursts of seismic energy. The Dhaula Kuan area has experienced low-magnitude earthquakes in the past, including a 3.3-magnitude quake in 2015.

Delhi’s Earthquake Vulnerability

Delhi-NCR falls in Seismic Zone IV, making it prone to moderate to strong earthquakes. Authorities have urged residents to stay informed about safety protocols and be prepared for possible aftershocks.

Precautionary Measures
  1. Stay Indoors or Move to Open Spaces: If indoors, take cover under sturdy furniture. If outside, stay away from buildings, trees, and electrical wires.
  1. Avoid Panic: Do not use elevators; use stairs instead.
  1. Emergency Kit: Keep essential supplies like water, food, a flashlight, and first-aid items ready.
  1. Follow Official Updates: Monitor updates from authorities and the National Centre for Seismology.

While no damage has been reported, officials continue to monitor the situation. Citizens are advised to remain cautious and prepared for any potential aftershocks.
