We bet you didn’t know this: Rajinikanth’s silent love story with Sridevi that never found its ending

Some love stories don’t end in heartbreak. They don’t explode into drama either. They simply… pause. Quietly. Almost like they were never meant to begin. That is exactly how hauntingly lovely the story of Rajinikanth and Sridevi is. Before they were legendary in their respective fields, they had been through the journey of being together on the sets of a film to eventually sharing their lives with each other.

They first met during the making of Moondru Mudichu, a Tamil movie, released in 1976. Back then, Sridevi was only thirteen years old, playing a character much older than herself while Rajinikanth was already making a name for himself on the silver screen. They went on to act in a total of eighteen to nineteen films together in different languages, with an undeniable chemistry that was absolutely electric.

However, in the in-between time of scripts and films, and working together, it is said that Rajinikanth began to experience deeper feelings for Sridevi. He fell in love. Not loudly. Not dramatically. But in the kind of quiet way that only grows stronger with time.

People close to them often mentioned how much he adored Sridevi. He had a strong relationship with her family, and he was protective of her. Over the years he went from just admiring her to being serious about acting on his liking for her. Then something happened. Something that could have changed his life forever.

When Rajinikanth went to Sridevi’s housewarming party, he went with the intention of telling her how he felt and asking her to marry him. This was not spontaneous; it had been a planned and thoughtful decision from his heart.

But fate had other plans.

A sudden blackout hit Sridevi’s home just as Rajinikanth was arriving. To someone like Rajinikanth, who is extremely superstitious, a blackout is much more than just a temporary loss of power; it is also a sign; it is a bad omen. At that point, he chose silence. He turned around and left without saying anything at all.

And just like that, the love story ended before it even began.

As was the case with everything in life, time went on. Sridevi eventually married Boney Kapoor in 1996, while Rajinikanth married Latha. However, they always had mutual respect for one another.

There was no bitterness. No awkward distance. Just a quiet understanding of what could have been.

Indeed, their relationship lasted for a very long time; for example, when Rajinikanth fell seriously ill, Sridevi prayed for him to recover and even fasted for him, showing how deep their bond was beyond romance.

Maybe that’s what makes this story linger. Not due to the fact that it was dramatic, but rather, because it wasn’t. Sometimes the most meaningful love stories are not actually the ones that happen; they’re the ones that almost did.
