Netflix has a lot of great horror movies for those who think jump scares are overrated. Here are seven horror movies available on Netflix that show horror can be terrifying, emotional, and memorable at the same time:
Bulbbul
Bulbbul is one of the most visually impressive Hindi horror movies. It takes place in colonial Bengal and tells the story of a young bride who grows into a mysterious woman as strange deaths begin to happen in her village. The movie is a combination of revenge, folklore, and gothic horror and features stunning visuals.
His House
After a couple comes to England as refugees, they move into a government house, only to discover there is something in their house that is very sinister. His House uses its ghosts to convey that the ghosts are not the only ones haunting the characters emotionally. It will leave you emotionally disturbed and is one of the best horror movies Netflix has to offer.
Gerald’s Game
Once again we see Stephen King as an influence on filmmakers in this chilling psychological horror story where a straightforward story morphs into an out-and-out fear fest. Much of the terror comes from being alone; from experiencing rage, exhaustion, anxiety and depression; and from one’s own mind becoming a terrible adversary. Years later, after seeing it, we recommend it as a classic in horror.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa
Long before horror-comedy dominated the film industry in Bollywood, there was this film which contained both humor and fright. The wonderful sense of mystery; the wonderful imaginary world around which the story revolves; and certainly the unique character of Manjulika are done to perfection in this film. The ending of the film also contains one of the best climaxes seen in any Hindi movie.
Incantation
This has to be one of the creepiest examples of a found-footage horror movie that I can think of. A mother attempts to shield her daughter from a curse that came from something the mother did many years earlier. Viewers will constantly feel like they are watching both fiction and reality, you will truly become part of the horror. Many horror forums list this as one of Netflix’s most disturbing films.
The Ritual
The sixth number in the collection focuses on “The Ritual”, which follows four mates trekking to the remote forests of Scandinavia. They quickly realise that their decision to come here may have been a mistake, as they find their survival is the least of their worries with a gradually darker twist awaiting them at every turn. For any lovers of folk-horror cinema, the film is definitely worth watching.
Apostle
The seventh entry centres around “Apostle”, where a man’s search for his lost sister takes him to a secluded religious cult on a mysterious island. The film depicts a horrifying spiral to a dark place filled with secrets, brutality and dread; and it becomes increasingly dark the further you view.
For horror fans, it is known that the best horror films do NOT just scare you for the moment, but stay with you long after you leave the cinema. The different styles of these seven films show that Netflix has so much more to offer horror fans than the generic titles everyone else suggests.
