Is Kartik Aaryan at his best with Luv Ranjan?

When Kartik Aaryan and Luv Ranjan come together, there’s a certain expectation that follows, of sharp monologues, messy relationships, and a kind of urban honesty that feels both exaggerated and familiar. With their much-anticipated reunion following the success of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (STKTS), the question isn’t just about another hit. It’s about whether this collaboration is where Kartik truly finds his strongest footing.

Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety represented more than just box office success – it was an instructive representation of the socio-cultural changes taking place in India at that time. A defining moment in film history, it transformed both its main character and its leading man (Kartik) almost instantaneously into a mainstream icon because of the genius of the screenplay, his groundbreaking performance, and the film’s outspokenness about contemporary relationships.

To be honest, Kartik did achieve his goals to some extent since the release of SKTKS. After amassing an impressive track record of box office successes and having different genres represented in his body of work – Love Aaj Kal ( rom-coms), Pati Patni Aur Woh (musical-rom-com), and Dhamaka, Shehzada, and Satyaprem KI Katha – he made a concerted effort to prevent being pigeon-holed as a quirky, talkative, Delhi boy. His aim was to move past that connection with audiences. But intent and impact don’t always align.

Although several of these movies fared reasonably well, there were many others that were not able to create the same type of cultural or commercial impact as Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. Many promising performances were overshadowed by uneven scripts or underwhelming storytelling. It’s not that Kartik regressed; it’s that the “Kartik Aaryan phenomenon” never quite peaked the same way again.

One film that was an exception to the above statement is Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, which is one of the biggest grossers at the box office and, in turn, proved that Kartik is indeed an established bankable star.

But Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 also comes with an asterisk. The franchise was already very well known thanks to Akshay Kumar’s performance in the original, so there was already a pre-existing audience for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, and with that being said, Kartik did put forth an impressive performance. The film’s success, then, becomes a mix of his effort and the franchise’s legacy advantage.

Which brings us back to Luv Ranjan. Ranjan writes in a way that feels like it is meant for Kartik. Kartik’s character(s) connect through the rhythm – long dialogue, emotional outbursts, comic timing, and therefore steps into a zone that he fits into naturally. Ranjan’s energy comes across with a clear focus; it’s not spread out. It leads to stronger, crisper, and more memorable performances.

Kartik will still continue to have successes outside the Ranjan relationship, but thus far, his most impactful work, the kind that lingers in pop culture, has come from within it. So, is this reunion just another film announcement? Or is it, in some ways, a reset?
