There is something about August 15 that Bollywood has always understood. It is a national holiday or a long weekend and the audience’s search for an entertainer make it a great box office hit.

The period of the Independence Day holiday has been well utilized by filmmakers down the years, with filmmakers turning to the action thriller genre or patriotic plays and social entertainers.

Among the movies that laid a strong groundwork for the Independence Day window is Ek Tha Tiger, starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. Released on August 15, 2012, the spy thriller directed by Kabir Khan opened on a stunning note, earning Rs. 32.93 crore on the first day, and gaining Rs. 198.78 crore net in India.

2013: Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara!
In the case of this movie, the Independence Day window was not a guarantee of success as it could earn Rs. 10.23 crore at the beginning and overall net of Rs. 59 crore in India.

2014: Singham Returns

Ajay Devgn reprised his role as Bajirao Singham in the Rohit Shetty action movie on August 15. The movie opened to a collection of Rs. 32.09 crore. Overall, the film managed to earn Rs. 139.68 crore in India. Trade sources claimed that the holiday on account of Independence Day was a beneficial factor for the film.

2015: Brothers

Interestingly, Brothers was released on August 14, which was a day earlier than August 15. This Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra starrer earned Rs. 82.47 crore in net collection in India but failed to score big, indicating that the holiday window alone cannot ensure the movie’s success.

2016: Rustom

Akshay Kumar returned to the slot with Rustom, which got released on August 12. The film enjoyed good collections owing to the holiday season and grossed Rs. 127.49 crore in net collection in India. On August 15 itself, it earned Rs. 17.81 crore.

2017: Toilet: Ek Prem Katha

Again an Akshay Kumar film ‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’ hit the screens on August 11 taking advantage of the Independence Day holiday period. The movie grossed Rs. 134.22 crore in net collection in India.

2018: Gold vs Satyameva Jayate

August 15 became another battle point in 2018 as Akshay Kumar’s Gold and John Abraham’s Satyameva Jayate released on the same day. Gold opened with Rs. 25.25 crore, while Satyameva Jayate opened with Rs. 20.52 crore, making it the perfect showdown!

And then came Gadar 2 in 2023.

Sunny Deol’s most-awaited sequel was released on August 11, leading to the emergence of an unprecedented box office sensation. On the very day of August 15, Gadar 2 collected Rs. 55.40 crore, its biggest single-day collection.

It is obvious that August 15 has given Bollywood what few dates can offer; a beating heart (the audience) and the perfect ambiance (national mood) in case of a successful film.

But it’s never guaranteed. Just because it is a holiday does not mean that the film will automatically get a good opening. Brothers and Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara! are perfect examples that further prove this.

And that’s precisely why Bollywood seems to be finding comfort in August 15. The day may bring them the audience, but it’s the film that will keep them coming to the theatres.

And the August 15 box-office tradition continues in 2026, with Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 and Sunny Deol-starrer Batwara 1947 arriving in cinemas on August 14, setting up yet another Independence Day weekend clash and proving that Bollywood’s love affair with the holiday is far from over.
