‘Jurassic Park’ legend Sam Neill dies at 78, just months after announcing he was Cancer-free

The movie industry mourns the loss of celebrated actor Sam Neill who died at 78. He is known for his outstanding portrayal of the paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park series. The actor died in Sydney, Australia and his family issued a statement about the sudden and shocking nature of his death. They asked for privacy and clarified that Sam had been in good health and cancer-free at the time of his death. 

News of Neill’s passing comes only months after the announcement about him beating a rare and severe form of blood cancer. In 2022, he had been diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma and had undergone treatments for many years. In the recent declaration, he informed the public about his successful recovery thanks to CAR T-cell therapy. 

Sam Neill was born in Northern Ireland in 1947 and immigrated to New Zealand with his family as a child. He started his career as an actor in the 1970s, gradually becoming one of the most renown actors of his age. Jurassic Park may have made him famous worldwide, but the numerous films he made during his long career go far beyond this franchise. He gave multiple remarkable performances in films such as The Piano, Dead Calm, The Hunt for Red October, Event Horizon and Hunt for the Wilderpeople as well as in TV-series such as Peaky Blinders, Invasion and Apples Never Fall. 

Sam Neill received various tributes from filmmakers and fans all over the world. At work as well as off it he was always remembered as a warm and witty person.  

Sam Neill has had a long career, with more than 150 acting credits to his name. Though he is gone, his unforgettable performances ensure that one of cinema’s most beloved stars will never be forgotten.
