A few young-adult romance series have managed to capture the internet’s attention quite like Off Campus, which is based on Elle Kennedy’s best-selling novels. The series has become a social media phenomenon, gaining praise for its perfect combination of love, friendships, comedy, and chemistry.
The show has done a good job of balancing romance with characters’ coming-of-age challenges. Viewers are able to see genuine character development and unpredictable relationships between characters in many episodes, making it difficult not to want to know what happens next. If you’ve already finished the series and are desperately searching for something that delivers the same emotional highs, romantic tension, and addictive storytelling, these five shows should be at the top of your watchlist.
1. The Summer I Turned Pretty
Cast: Lola Tung, Christopher Briney, Gavin Casalegno, Jackie Chung, Rachel Blanchard Director: Jenny Han Where to Watch: Prime Video
The Summer I Turned Pretty is created by Jenny Han and is about teenager Belly Conklin. Belly’s annual summertime trip to the beach is forever changed when she finds herself caught between two brothers, Conrad and Jeremiah. Other themes of the series are about experiencing your first love, growing up, and facing the heartbreaks that go along with discovering who you are.
Belly’s character, played by Lola Tung, will capture your heart, along with both Conrad and Jeremiah, played by Christopher Briney and Gavin Casalegno, who will also have you invested in this love triangle and, above all else, will keep you addicted to the outcome. Like Off Campus, this series contains tons of romantic tension, emotional conflict, and love that will keep you on an emotional rollercoaster from the first episode to the last.
2. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
Cast: Lana Condor, Noah Centineo, Janel Parrish, Anna Cathcart, John Corbett Director: Susan Johnson Where to Watch: Netflix
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is one of the most loved rom-com franchises. The film introduced us to Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor), a timid teenager whose “love” letters, written to all her former crushes, unknowingly get sent to all of them, thus changing her life forever.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before has quickly gained interest and popularity with viewers. With a classic “high school love story”, it also leans toward strong character connection. The film is enough to make fans of both Off Campus root for a loving relationship every step of the way!
3. XO, Kitty
Cast: Anna Cathcart, Minyeong Choi, Gia Kim, Sang Heon Lee, Anthony Keyvan Director: Jenny Han Where to Watch: Netflix
XO, Kitty is the spin-off of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and introduces Kitty Song Covey (Anna Cathcart), who many fans loved from all three movies in the original trilogy. In an attempt to reunite with her boyfriend (who lives hundreds of miles away), Kitty decides to travel to South Korea and attend an exclusive international school. However, Kitty’s plans turn out nothing like she thought they would. Instead of going to South Korea to find her boyfriend and have the relationship of her dreams, she ends up with friendships, new feelings for another boy, family secrets, and then creating a love triangle!
Anna Cathcart has such a wonderful and energetic personality; it’s like she was born to play the character of Kitty in the series. The series is very cute and youthful with emotional drama, love triangles, and tons of entertainment value.
4. One Tree Hill
Cast: Chad Michael Murray, James Lafferty, Hilarie Burton, Bethany Joy Lenz, Sophia Bush Creator: Mark Schwahn Where to Watch: Prime Video
One Tree Hill was one of the early teen dramas that rose to the occasion long before the advent of the streaming era and its impact on social media. The story chronicles two half-brothers, Lucas and Nathan Scott, as they navigate their family dynamic, friendships, relationships, and their own personal goals, all while living in the small town of Tree Hill.
Featuring memorable performances such as Chad Michael Murray, James Lafferty, Hilarie Burton, Bethany Joy Lenz, and Sophia Bush, it has maintained a fanbase well after its series finale aired. The diverse nature of the show, including romance, heartbreak, friendship, and character development, relates closely to the ways in which Off Campus has endeared itself to its viewers. If you are searching for a series with multiple seasons that can keep you entertained for hours, One Tree Hill is definitely worth considering!
5. Tell Me Lies
Cast: Grace Van Patten, Jackson White, Catherine Missal, Spencer House, Sonia Mena Creator: Meaghan Oppenheimer Where to Watch: Disney+
Like the more complicated and emotionally chaotic elements of Off Campus, Tell Me Lies is a series that takes a darker and more mature view of the intimate relationships of youth. The series features Lucy Albright and Stephen DeMarco as the central characters whose emotional relationship starts in college and ultimately evolves into an obscenely toxic and complicated relationship.
Grace Van Patten and Jackson White do an extraordinary job of sustaining interest in the main couple and providing insight into the varying dynamics of their relationship. Not only do viewers see typical elements of romantic dramas, but they also see elements of manipulation; power plays; lies; and betrayal as part of the central couple’s relationship.
