The draft, titled the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) (Second) Amendment Rules, 2025, would require platforms to implement searchable and sortable filters based on the product’s country of origin. This change empowers consumers to make informed purchasing decisions by easily identifying where products come from, dramatically reducing the time needed to locate this information across vast product listings.
This amendment directly supports the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Vocal for Local’ initiatives by making ‘Made in India’ products easily discoverable. It ensures a level playing field for domestic manufacturers, helping their goods gain equal visibility alongside imported items and encouraging consumers to choose locally made alternatives.
Furthermore, the introduction of these filters will aid regulators in efficiently monitoring compliance and verifying product information, streamlining the process of identifying violations. This proposal is another key step toward building a transparent, consumer-friendly, and competitive e-commerce ecosystem that aligns with national priorities. The draft is currently open for public comment and feedback from all stakeholders until November 22.
