Consumer Watchdog Cracks Down, Sends Regulatory Notices to Zepto, Blinkit, and Meesho

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has ramped up its scrutiny of 11 major e-commerce companies. This includes Blinkit, Zepto, and Meesho, over alleged violations of labelling and packaging norms under the Legal Metrology Act. CCPA’s action came after receiving complaints from consumers over the quality of the product.

The notices stem from complaints related to improper declarations, particularly missing manufacturing or expiration dates on products for human consumption. Swiggy Instamart, MyGlamm, and Snapdeal that have received warnings as the CCPA intensifies its enforcement on consumer safety standards.

A senior official from CCPA said, “If e-commerce companies don’t follow the norms, then strict actions will be taken against them.” These actions may include penalties and show-cause notices, and if found guilty, the company’s license can be revoked.

This development follows rising concerns over quick commerce companies, which are rapidly gaining popularity but face criticism over regulatory non-compliance. The AICPDF recently called for an investigation into alleged predatory pricing tactics by Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart. These companies are now under dual scrutiny from both the CCPA and the Competition Commission of India (CCI).

Despite regulatory challenges, the quick commerce sector continues to attract investor interest and competition, with Flipkart, BigBasket, and JioMart expanding into this fast-growing space. However, compliance with consumer protection laws is now a critical issue for companies looking to maintain their growth momentum in the face of mounting legal pressure.
